Oral care – made simple
Because a healthy human is naturally well-equipped to care for themselves, effective dental care is all about supporting the body’s natural healing abilities. The mouth, with its mucous membrane and saliva, is already naturally “well-armed” against many bacteria. Before brushing, use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between the teeth, where food particles occasionally get stuck. After that, brush your teeth thoroughly for about two minutes using light pressure and our tooth powder, also known as dentifrice powder. Do not rinse too thoroughly afterwards, as our tooth powder creates an alkaline environment in the mouth that helps inhibit harmful bacteria associated with cavities and periodontitis.
Please note: Our tooth powder is a natural product free from anti-caking agents and artificial flavoring. The fine chalk particles can clump together with salt crystals or herbs and spices, forming small lumps—this is not a defect. The lumps dissolve immediately in your mouth. After opening the jar for the first time, leave it slightly open in the bathroom to let any excess moisture escape.
Cost of natural oral care
A tin of our handcrafted natural tooth powder may cost more upfront compared to most conventional toothpastes. However, the overall expense for dental care products decreases because you’ll likely only need our powder along with floss or interdental brushes. Gum inflammation also tends to diminish thanks to the anti-inflammatory properties of our ingredients. The chalk base creates an alkaline environment in the mouth, leaving cavity-causing bacteria virtually no chance to thrive. With daily, minimal use—just a small amount about the size of a “knife tip”—one pack of our tooth powder lasts approximately six months. Sustainable oral health, however, can only be achieved if you entirely switch away from synthetic dental products (see: What to do about gum inflammation).
What to do about gum inflammation
First, identify the cause: What have you been using to brush your teeth so far? Most synthetic dental products contain foaming agents (surfactants) that are now recognized as inflammatory triggers. Furthermore, conventional toothpastes often fail to sufficiently reduce plaque or tartar, leaving residue at the gumline that provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. So what can you do? Switch to SCHETTLER’s tooth powder immediately! If you’re experiencing pain or bleeding, start with our salt-free options: Type 4 or Type 5. Brush twice daily for two minutes each time, using light pressure.
If the inflammation is severe, it’s best to temporarily stop brushing. Instead, you can use our tooth powder as a rinse: Mix a knife-tip amount of the powder with water in a small glass, stir, and thoroughly rinse your mouth. The inflammation should begin to heal soon.
How to prevent cavities
Simply put: by using tooth powder. The chalk particles provide thorough cleaning as they are gentle abrasives of medium to low hardness. The alkaline environment created by the chalk removes the habitat that harmful bacteria—responsible for cavities and periodontal disease—rely on. The salt dissolves immediately in the mouth and has a disinfecting effect. So, it’s actually beneficial not to rinse your mouth too thoroughly after brushing with our tooth powder and to leave a small amount of powder in the oral cavity.
Bad breath
Bad breath originating in the oral cavity is, unfortunately, quite common. Trapped food particles in interdental spaces and gum pockets or advanced tooth decay are the most frequent causes. Interdental brushes or dental floss are often effective against stuck food particles. However, over time, teeth may shift closer together or spread apart, creating gaps or pockets that are not easily cleaned with simple home remedies. In such cases, you may have otherwise healthy teeth, yet still experience bad breath. A dentist’s intervention is necessary in these situations. For cavities as well, a visit to the dentist is essential for proper treatment.
By using SCHETTLERs tooth powder, however, you’ll likely need fewer dental visits since our powders make life extremely difficult, if not impossible, for cavity-causing bacteria.
The right dental hygiene
Based on our experience with SCHETTLERs tooth powder: Brushing your teeth with our product largely removes existing tartar. This minimizes gum inflammation, makes cavities extremely rare, and eliminates gum pockets. It also significantly prevents the formation of new tartar. Simply moisten your toothbrush once or twice a day, dip the bristles lightly into the powder, and then brush your teeth thoroughly using gentle, circular motions: front, back, and chewing surfaces.
The chalk particles are 2 to 2.5 micrometers in size, forming remineralizing, fine abrasive agents when combined with saliva and water. With a Mohs hardness of 3, these particles have a relatively low hardness level. The resulting abrasion value of 40–60 is considered tooth-friendly; these are medium- to low-hardness abrasives. The alkaline environment created by the tooth chalk deprives harmful bacteria—blamed for cavities and periodontal disease—of their habitat.
Therefore, it’s actually beneficial not to rinse your mouth too thoroughly after brushing with our tooth powder.
How to get sparkling white teeth
You could consider filing a complaint with Mother Nature. If that doesn’t help, you might try bleaching or dyeing your teeth, though the results often aren’t completely satisfying. Another option would be to have your teeth ground down and replaced with a set of perfectly white artificial teeth. There are also prosthetic overlays that can be placed on your natural teeth. Unfortunately, toothpastes, rinses, and powders alone can’t achieve significant whitening.

Why we don’t use xylitol
Xylitol (E967), also known as birch sugar, was originally derived from birch wood or bark. Nowadays, it’s usually produced from other raw materials, such as corn cobs, straw, or sugarcane residues. Its production involves temperatures of up to 200°C and the use of sulfuric acid or caustic soda. To us, this does not sound like a naturally pure ingredient. Since our healing chalk already has antibacterial and remineralizing properties, we can do without xylitol.
